Vintage Watches Captivate Gen Z

Retro Timepieces Experience Revival Among Young Collectors

In today’s fast-paced world, where everything feels temporary, vintage watches are making a serious comeback, especially among Gen Z collectors. These timepieces do more than just tell time—they carry rich histories and stories worth sharing. It’s clear that vintage watches are more than just accessories; they’re becoming a cultural phenomenon.

What’s the appeal? It’s all about craftsmanship and individuality. Unlike mass-produced watches, each vintage watch has its own character, often reflecting the era from which it originated. For those who value uniqueness and self-expression, a vintage piece like a classic Omega Speedmaster or a rugged Seiko 6105 can really stand out and spark interesting conversations.

Take Second Vintage, a Danish auction platform that’s been making waves since its launch in 2024. They’ve completed over 5,200 auctions, connecting collectors from more than 54 countries.

The platform aims to simplify the vintage watch market, making it accessible for those who might feel intimidated. With over 100 new auctions every week, you can find everything from a stylish Citizen Bullhead to a sought-after Rolex Submariner—all verified for authenticity.

This accessibility is crucial for young buyers, who are becoming more intentional about their purchases. A recent trend shows that Gen Z prefers investing in quality items that hold value and history, rather than jumping on the fast-fashion bandwagon. Vintage watches fit perfectly into this mindset.

According to Second Vintage founder, Noam Litvak, choosing a vintage watch is a statement against overconsumption: “These watches were made to last generations, and we’re here to preserve that craftsmanship.”

Collection of vintage wristwatches arranged on a marble windowsill beside leather watch rolls, a loupe, and stacked horology books. The assortment includes stainless steel and gold watches with both leather straps and metal bracelets, featuring chronographs, dive watches, and classic dress styles, suggesting a curated watch collector’s workspace.

Sustainability is also a big factor. As environmental concerns grow, many young consumers are looking for ways to make more conscious choices, and vintage watches offer an appealing alternative to the throwaway culture.

Buying vintage means you’re not just acquiring a unique item; you’re supporting a circular economy that values preservation. Snagging a timeless Longines Conquest or an old-school Tissot can feel rewarding, knowing you’re investing in something that lasts.

Social media plays a significant role in this trend as well. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok are hot spots for showcasing personal style, and vintage watches are gaining attention. Influencers and everyday users alike are sharing collections, styling tips and the stories behind their timepieces, further fueling interest. The hashtag #VintageWatch is thriving, helping enthusiasts connect and share their passion.

As Gen Z continues to embrace vintage watches, it’s clear this trend isn’t just a passing phase.

“The combination of craftsmanship, individuality, and sustainability resonates with our values. We’re not just buying watches; we’re investing in pieces of history that reflect our unique identities,” explained Casey Pederson, a vintage watch collector.

“The growing demand for vintage watches among younger collectors signals a shift in how we view luxury and value. It’s no longer about having the latest model; it’s about appreciating timeless pieces like a classic Hamilton Khaki or a vintage IWC Mark XI that come with their own stories,” said Pederson.

As the vintage watch market evolves, the future looks bright for these cherished timepieces and the new generation of collectors ready to embrace them.
