Learn How To Access and Read Them Yourself
In February, I had an Akashic Records reading. If you’ve followed my work, you know I love all things woo-woo—so it shouldn’t surprise you that I was thrilled with the results. I learned a few new things: I was a witch in the 1500s and my community turned on me, so I’m naturally suspicious of other people in this life; my soul family is small, which is why I feel like I don’t have many extra-close friends; and my old dog, Ollie, was reincarnated as a cat and that fits his personality perfectly.
My reader also reiterated a few things I already knew, like my closest friends have been friends with me for multiple lifetimes; I should be eating better; I need more compassion for myself; and I procrastinate so much because I worry about not meeting everyone’s expectations.

As we were going through my reading, I found myself a little confused about what the Akashic Records actually are; and possibly out of having a more intense curiosity, I asked if I could learn to read the Akashic Records myself. So, good news. If you’ve had no idea what I’m talking about so far, I’m here to tell you exactly what the Akashic Records are and how to read them.
What Are the Akashic Records?
Have you ever read the novelThe Midnight Library? It’s about a girl who is close to death, and in the moments before she dies, she finds herself in a library full of books that chronicle every choice she’d ever made in her lifetime. The Akashic Records are kind of like that—a spiritual database of everything you’ve ever done, thought, felt or said; not just in this life but in all of your lifetimes. The theory is that everyone has Akashic Records, and when a practitioner looks at yours, they’re able to read off exactly what happened and explain why you felt a certain way or did a particular thing. Unlike tarot cards or other divination forms, the Akashic Records are straightforward and not up for interpretation. They are truly a record of events.

How Do You Access and Read Akashic Records?
At the beginning of my session, my reader talked me through some breathwork and a short, guided meditation. Then, she declared, “Your records are open!” and began to speak to me. Nearly every practitioner will tell you that anyone can access their Akashic Records. The process is as simple as my reader made it.
First, ground yourself with intentional and focused breathwork. I do this by imagining a while light surrounding me more and more with each exhale, until I feel relaxed and steady.
Next, enter a meditative space. Set an intention like “I am open to reading my Akashic Records.” YouTube has some excellent guided meditations for just this purpose. I recommend Access Your Akashic Records Guided Meditation from Soul Tranquility Healing that walks through an entire experience in the Akashic Records room.
Once you’ve entered the space, learning what to say is easy. You ask questions—just like you’re searching for something in a Google database of your soul. Some ideal questions could include: “What am I supposed to learn in this life,” “What is (insert your name)’s purpose in my life” and “Why do I (insert annoying habit here).”

Really though, you can ask anything you’d like. Some people see a guide in their records room that helps them find answers. Others will hear voices, see mental videos, or even see colors and shapes. Gain what information you can, and when you come out of the meditation, write everything down and explore what it means for you.
Ultimately, I think I’ll stick with having someone else read mine. That’s not because I don’t trust myself to accurately read my own, though. It’s more because if I get overly emotional about a topic, I shut down and can’t focus.
For example, a friend of mine died late last year, and I’ve beat myself up over some of our interacts ever since. When I think of her, I just get depressed. But during my Akashic Records session, I asked about her and our situation when she died. My reader told me to knock it off, that my friend wouldn’t want that for us. She also told me how to bring her spirit closer to me so we can continue to enjoy one another’s company. I doubt I would have been able to come to those conclusions on my own.
